I wanted to shape my entire look around this dress, so I centred it around the colour grey (or 'gray', depending on which country you're reading from!). I've always dug monochromatic dressing, and I'm loving how the range of monochrome has expanded from just black, white and shades in between to more bold colours like red and royal blue this F/W '17 season. I stuck to the more classic grey palette in this look, but I'm sharing my tips on how to do tonal dressing without running the risk of just looking "matchy, matchy".
1. Choose Shades
Although an all red suit look amazing, you don't have to have an exactly matching pantsuit to dress tonally. Choose a colour and mix shades of that tone together. I chose shades of grey in this look, but notice that the colours are not exact. Find a colour family you like, and go for it.
2. Add patterns or textures of the same tonal family
Mix it up by adding stripes, lace, leather, metallics or velvet in the same colour family to add interest and dimension to your tonal look.
3. Experiment with cuts and shapes
Go oversized, asymmetrical, bodycon...the world is your oyster. You'll look chic as hell in whatever you're wearing when dressing tonally.
4. Accessorize
If one-shade dressing is too much for you, break it up with a contrasting colour in your bag, shoes or a belt. Think of the colour wheel to really make your accessories pop.
5. Walk Tall
Dressing in all one shade, especially if you go with a bold colour like red or blue, can be intimidating and the clothes can easily start to wear you instead. Tonal dressing is definitely a look. Just know that you'll end up looking fierce and chic AF, so work it.
